Miles’ Career Double-Double Earns Player of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Saint Joseph’s senior Isaiah Miles was named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday, while freshmen DeAndre Abram of George Mason was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Dec. 21 – Dec. 27.
Miles scored a career-high 36 points and tied his career-high with 15 rebounds in Hawks' 79-62 win over Virginia Tech. A forward from Baltimore, Md., he connected on 11-for-18 from the field and 11-of-12 from the foul line, both career-highs. Miles also tied his personal best with four blocked shots. He scored the Hawks' first nine points of the second half as they expanded on a 35-26 halftime lead, and finished the second half with 25 points. It marked the first 30-point game of his career and his fourth double-double of the season. He now leads the Hawks in scoring (17.4) and rebounding (8.2).
Abram surpassed his career-high against Wagner, pouring in a game-high 27 points and recording his first-ever double-double with 10 rebounds. The guard from Carrollton, Texas, was 7-for-13 from the floor, including a 6-for-8 performance from 3-point land. When Mason trailed by eight in the first half, Abram hit three consecutive treys to give the lead to the Patriots. Abram's six triples marks a career-high and the first time a Patriot his six 3-pointers in a game since Andre Cornelius hit seven at UNCW in February 2011. For the game, Abram shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 75.0 percent from three-point range. The freshman added a 7-for-10 effort at the charity stripe for a personal-best. It’s the second straight A-10 rookie award for Abram.

Davidson’s Jack Gibbs became the fourth player in league history to score 40 points in a game twice in a season, tallying 41 versus Morehead State … Dayton’s Charles Cooke 21 points, nine rebounds and two assists, one of which was on Kyle Davis’ game-winning basket with two seconds left against Miami (Ohio) … UD freshman Steve McElvene had 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the win against the rival Redhawks … Marquise Moore had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double while dishing out five assists in George Mason’s win over Wagner … Melvin Johnson was on fire in two games last week, hitting 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the field, including 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from 3-point range to average 18.5 points in a pair of VCU wins.
